        The 1850 Census of Bibb Co. shows Yancey D. Atchison age 42, living in the E. C. River area.  He has listed as his wife Jane R. age 31, born in Alabama.  Below them are listed:  Nancy age 16, Newton, age 14, Lucy age 13, Martha age 12, Jackson age 11, Laura A. age 9, Charlotte age 7, William age 6 and Jane age 4.  Yancey had earlier been married to Susannah Gibson and the first five children are believed to be from that marriage.  Susannah probably died during or after the birth of Jackson.

        The 1860 Census of Talladega Co. shows Y.D. Atchison age 51, living in the Southern Division of Talladega County, Post Office Fayetteville.

Jane is age 40, Laura, age 15, Charlotte, age 13, William Yancey, age 12.  On the next page is listed Jackson Atchison, age 20 as a laborer, Jane age 10, James, age 9, Edmund age 7, Malvina age 4, Pickens B. age 3 and Margaret age 8/12.  The 1860 Census of Bibb Co. lists James Atchison as living in E.C. River with his wife, Margaret and child Columbus.

Note:  Yancy Atchison may be buried at Mulberry Baptist Church Cemetery but he is more likely buried in a cemetery that is on the former Atchison land.  Jesse Rae Willette remembers playing near a cemetery when she was a child.  It only had a few stones and was near a creek.  I haven't been able to visit this area and think it may be difficult to find although I think I have an idea where it may be. Direction to Atchison Cemetery according to Cemeteries of Chilton, page 273:

From Maplesville State 22 east to ST 191 left turn for about 5.0 miles, left turn on dirt road.  Follow this road about 1.25 miles to crossing of creek.  Cemetery in woods on right about 1100 feet. Surveyed by Frank and T.A. Brown, Benjamin D. Roberts on May 4, 1989, Cemetery overgrown, no graves located.

Note: NEW INFORMATION-There are plans for several of the Atchison descendants to visit this cemetery in early February 2005. We have found a former IP employee who knows exactly where the cemetery is.

Notes for BENNETT M. JAMES ATCHISON:

        The 1860 Census of Bibb Co. Alabama lists James??? Atchison, age 22, born in AL, living next door to James and Martha Nix.  James' wife Margaret is listed as age 22, born in AL.  Their children are Columbus, age 2, and Mary, age 2/12, both born in AL.

My mother-in-law, Adelle Atchison Wright, remembered her family talking about Jack Atchison and she had assumed that was her father's grandfather's name.  Her father's name was Homer B. Atchison and his father's name was Columbus Filmore Atchison.  While looking for this name in the 1860 census I found his father and mother in Bibb Co. AL. Their names were James and Margaret Atchison, both are born about 1839. These names do not fit into any of the Atchison offspring in the 1850 census by ages.  Also we could not find marriage records except for a Bennett Atchison and Margaret Gardner married in 1859.  His father was Jackson Atchison and he was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church.  The only thing I could figure was that James and Bennett are the same person, because James or Bennett (whichever) disappears during the Civil War and Margaret is left with 3 children in the 1870 census:  Mary, Columbus and Bennett Monroe.  Possibly he died during the war and she named the last child after him.  She must have lived near her father-in-law and that is where my mother-in-law got the name Jack.  Margaret has died by the 1880 census and the children must have been on their own at a young age.  Bennett Monroe's descendants spell their name as Atcheson.

Another interesting point is that my mother-in-law's grandmother's sister was married to one of Yancy Dyer Atchison's sons, William Yancy Atchison so she knew him as Uncle Bill and always assumed that he was a brother to her grandfather but that does not seem to be true.

I guess that is enough to totally confuse you but we have puzzled over it quite awhile.

Information 1: I have not totally proved that this is the Atchison that is the father of Columbus Filmore Atchison but several facts seem to fit together.  The reason I am not sure about this connection is that this person is named Bennet in some place and James in other

Information 2: Columbus Filmore Atchison's death certificate has Bennett Atchison as his father.

Information 3: Jack Atchison and Margaret Atchison's names are found in the records of Mulberry church after the war.  He had lost 2 sons and she had lost her husband in the war.  She is found in the 1870 Census of Bibb Co. AL but apparently is deceased soon after that.

Information 4: I think the children were then raised by others and there is the reason that Bennett changed the spelling of his name.  Descendant of Columbus Atchison seem to have heard very little about the family history.

Information 5: Some of the descendants of Columbus Atchison remember the name Jack in this family.  I think that Jack would be the father-in-law of Margaret Gardner Atchison. After the civil war when James had died she apparently lived with her father-in-law.
