Generation No. 1

1.  LEWIS COOKSON 'OLD CLUBAXE'3 DAVIS  (ABSOLOM2, RICHARD1) was born 1757 in Hanover Co. VA, and died February 03, 1835 in Autauga Co. AL.  He married (1) SARAH 'SALLY' ANDERSON about 1784, daughter of JOHN ANDERSON and MARY SOUTHARD.  She was born about 1760 in Morgan Co. GA, and died August 1797 in Wilkes Co. GA.  He married (2) SARAH 'SALLY' PERKINS October 14, 1798 in Lincoln Co. GA.  She died 1836.

Notes for LEWIS COOKSON 'OLD CLUBAXE' DAVIS:

The following information was taken from the book "Your Inheritance" by Mrs. Grady Ross...

Lewis Cookson Davis was born in Hanover County, Virginia in the year 1757.  He died in Autauga County, Alabama, 3 February, 1835.  He was twice married. The first time in 1783 to Sarah 'Sally' Anderson, daughter of John and Mary Southard Anderson.  She was born in 1757, in Virginia and died in Wilkes county, Georgia, august, 1797.  Lewis Cookson Davis' second wife was Sarah 'Sally' Perkins whom he married in Lincoln County, Georgia on 14th of October 1798.  He and his second wife are buried on the plantation three miles west of Autaugaville, AL on what was known as the Old Whetstone Place, later called the Pigford Place.

The parents of Lewis Cookson Davis have not yet been identified.  Some of his descendants say that he was 'close kin' to President Jefferson Davis.  If so, it would have to come through President Jefferson Davis' father, Samuel Davis, as he and Lewis Cookson Davis were contemporaries.  The relationship may have come through Samuel's father, Evan Davis.

John Anderson, father of Lewis Cookson Davis' first wife, married Mary Southard of Hanover City, Virginia.  They moved with the family to Wilkes County, Georgia after the Revolutionary War, and settled on what is known as Anderson Mill Creek.  They had the first grist mill in Wilkes County and they sent back to Virginia for mill stones.  John Anderson was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati.  The Andersons were staunch Baptists.  The Southards were of the most aristocratic in Virginia.

The will of John Anderson was devised on 11th of September, 1806 and proved by the 5th of November, 1810 in Wilkes County, Georgia.  His legatees were:

        wife, Mary

Sons, Thomas and John R. Anderson

the 7 children of Sally Davis

My six children:  Catherine Nowlin, Jean Heard, Thomas Anderson, Fanny Smith, John R. Anderson, and Polly Anthony.

        Granddaughter:  Betsy Lane

                $1.00 to Lewis C. Davis

Mary Anderson's will was executed 29 May, 1826, and probated 10 November, 1826, in Wilkes County, Georgia.  She names her deceased husband as a soldier of the Revolution.  Her heirs were:

Granddaughter, Elizabeth, wife of John Heard.

Equal shares to the surviving children of my deceased daughter, Sally Davis.

Same to the children of deceased daughter, Jean Heard.

Grandsons, Edward and John Anderson--sons of my son, John R. Anderson

        Son, Thomas.

John and his wife, Mary, had very fine backgrounds.  Their way of life, their extensive holdings, and their friends in Wilkes county, testifying to these facts.  John's estate listing was very large, covering sixteen typewritten pages.

At this time, the parentage of Sally Perkins, the second wife of Lewis Cookson Davis, is not known.
