Notes for PETER HEEDLY/ HEADLEY:
The Headley Family
1800-Present by Unknown
The history of our Headley family, as we know it today, begins in Darlington District or County, South Carolina. There, Peter Headley, a planter, raised a family with his wife Rebecca on their land near Sparrow Swamp and Belk's Branch.
Though I have not proved it, I believe that Peter and Rebecca had at least five sons and two daughters. The sons, William, Sylvester, Lawson, Charles and James Headley, all appear in land records and deeds from Darlington County and seemed to all live near each other. Peter and his sons dealt in a great deal of land in the county, often in parcels over 100 acres each. Much of Peter's land was also deeded to his children, including 227 acres to Sylvester Headley in 1837. Two of his daughters Polly Bell and Lavinia Galloway, also received land from their father in 1843, some time before Peter's death. Because of all these land records, I believe that Peter may have been one of the larger land owners in the county in the early 1800's.
Unfortunately, the Darlington County court house was burned in 1805 and many of the early county records were lost. I'm sure that a great deal of our families history also went up in flames.
Some of the families that the Headley's were connected with in Darlington included the Reynolds family, the Mims, the Bakers and the Windhams. Many of these families intermarried and moved with the Headleys to Alabama.
Sometime during the 1830's some of Peter Headley's sons got the itch to move west and they headed out for Alabama. Charles Headley, our direct ancestor, and his brother James were in Autauga County, Alabama by the time the 1840 census was taken. James, William and Lawson all followed and soon all five Headley brothers lived and farmed near each other in Central Alabama. At that time there were still Indians in the area and bears still roamed the woods. Their children spread across Autauga County and later Chilton County, becoming one of the most famous families of the area.
These Headley families were farmers, and from the looks of all the deeds and land records from Autauga and Chilton Counties, they were pretty good at it. Many grew cotton and corn and raised cattle. A few, like Elisha S. Headley, son of Sylvester Headley, even grew potatoes. To give you an idea of the mortgages of the day, in 1856 two Headleys mortgaged 2000 pounds of cotton for $20.24. Many of the Headleys, including Charles, owned slaves at this time.
Many of the Headley men believed in their way fo life enough to go to war to retain it. The Headleys sent many of their young men to the Confederate Army, and a few saw action in some of this country's most famous battles. Elijah Headley, son of Sylvester Headley, fought at Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Chickamauga, Georgia. His brother, Elisha S. Headley fought next to him at Fredericksburg. Lawson Headley's son Ira was in the same 44th Alabama Infantry as his cousins. Caleb N. Headley was injured at the Battle of Spanish Forks or Mobile in Southern Alabama. And Powell H. Headley, son of Charles, was captured and held prisoner until a few days after Lee surrendered to Grant.
After the war, the Headley family returned to farming and raising large families. Sylvester "Buddie" Headley, son of Charles Headley and our direct descendent, became a prominent citizen in the newly formed Chilton County and other Headleys became famous peach growers and cotton farmers. Albert Headley gained a reputation as a builder in the county seat of Clanton. The Headleys were prominent in church and civic affairs throughout the county, and to this day the Headley name is known through out Chilton County.
The Mims and Baker familes had also migrated from Darlington, SC, to Autauga and Chilton Counties and continued to be closely related to the Headley family. Along with other families from Georgia and South Carolina they helped to build and populate this former Indian Territory.
Sylvester Headley's family grew large and included Thomas J. Headley, born in 1882, who married Chinie Leona Gentry. Together they raised four boys and a girl and brought the family from a farm near Jemison in Chilton County to the city of Birmingham. From there the family made their own way to the places we are today.
We are the descendents of this Headley legacy, and though we are all over the country now, we have a deep history in this family and people.

Notes for SYLVESTER 'BUDDIE' HEADLEY:
Copied from internet site, http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/r/e/y/Donna-Reynolds-Ga/GENE5-0004.html:
Sylvester loved to hunt raccoons, rabbits, possums and turkey. He used to tell a story about killing seven turkeys with a single shot. He said they were all sitting on the same branch and he hit the limb and shot off their toes. Sylvester remained tall and thin throughout his life and in later years he had white hair and a long white beard. Their farmland was near Verbena in Chilton Co. AL. Sylvester farmed for a living and bought his first sheep through mail-order and was one of the few farmers in the county who tried raising sheep.
