Generation No. 1
1. WILLIAM MORGAN3 LOVELADY (JOSEPH2, THOMAS?WILLIAM?1) was born 1770 in TN, and died before December 22, 1846 in Shelby Co. AL. He married RACHEL LINDSEY about 1794 in Green Co., TN, daughter of DAVID LINDSEY and MARY CASEY. She was born 1773 in PA, and died after 1846 in Shelby Co. AL.
Notes for WILLIAM MORGAN LOVELADY:
From the Lovelady family book, found at the Birmingham Public Library:
William Lovelady was the husband of David Lindsey's daughter, Rachel Lindsey. They were married in Tennessee, probably Green County, before 1800. Wm. and Rachel Lovelady applied for land in Madison County, Ala. in 1811. He is listed on the 1816 tax list of Madison County. William Lovelady was named in the act approved on Jan. 12, 1833(Acts 1832-33, page 49) as one of the first Commissioners on Public Buildings for Coosa County, and according to Brewer's History of Coosa County, William Lovelady was one of the few whites scattered in different parts of the county, living among the Indians before the organization of the county and lived where Eclectic now stands. William Lovelady was also one of the first officials of that county. He therefore, moved from Tenn. to Madison County, Alabama, after 1809 and lived in Madison County until after 1816 and probably until after 1820 as he is not found on the 1820 Census of Shelby County, Alabama. (He does not appear on the 1820 Census of Madison Co. However, his name is shown on the 1816 tax list of Madison County). In Morgan County Deed Book "B", page 78, there is recorded a Power of Attorney from William Lovelady of Bibb County, Ala., as guardian of Jane Lovelady, to Benjamin Davis, Jr., empowering Davis to receive from William Lovelady, Jr., Administrator of the estate of Stephen Lovelady, deceased, of Morgan County, the share of Jane Lovelady now Jane Davis. (It is believed that Stephen Lovelady, Sr. was a brother of William Lovelady, Sr. Joseph Lovelady, who obtained a land grant in Green County (Tenn) in 1787 is thought to be the father.) William Lovelady, Sr. has not been found listed in any Census of Shelby Co. so he probably did not move until about 1840, since his Will is on record in the Shelby Co. records, Will Book 2, page 49.
From "Will Book E", pp. 49-50 and 314, Shelby Co. AL.

Notes for RACHEL LINDSEY:
Copied from "The Lindsey Family of Alabama":
One of the distributees of David Lindsey's estate, listed as a full heir, was William Lovelady. According to Mr. Fulton, he was the husband of David Lindsey's daughter, Rachel, a fact that is amply corroborated. William Lovelady's will, dated 31 Dec 1845, admitted to probate 30 Jan 1847, names his "beloved wife, Rachel" etc.
The census of 1850 lists Rachel Lovelady as aged 77, born in Pennsylvania, living with Henry Lovelady, aged 50, who was born in Tennessee. Rachel was, therefore,l believe born about 1773, married before 1800 in Tennessee, and resided there until after 1809, not being listed in the census of Madison county in 1809.
According to Jones and Gandrud's "Alabama Records", Vol. 115, P. 52, William Lovelady of Madison County applied for land in that county in 1811. He is listed on the 1816 tax list of Madison county. William Lovelady was named in the act approved Jan 12, 1833 (Acts 1832-3, p. 49) as one of the first Commissioners on public buildings for Coosa County, and according to Brewer's "History of Coosa County, Alabama Historical Quarterly 4, pp. 28-9, William was one of the few whites "scattered in different parts of the county, living among the Indians before the organization of the county" and lived near where Eclectic now stands. Brewer also states (Ibid, p. 80) that William Lovelady was one of the first officials of that county.
He, therefore, moved from Tennessee to Madison County, AL. after 1809; lived in Madison County until after 1816, and probably until after 1820, as he is not found in the census of Shelby County of 1820.

Notes for SARAH A. LOVELADY:
From the Lovelady Family Book found in the Birmingham Public Library:
IV. SARAH LOVELADY--was born on June 30, 1795, and died on March 8, 1846. There are two Sarah Lovelady's marriage licenses, and there were probably two different Sarahs. Marriage Book "A", page 160, states Benjamin Davis was married to Sarah Lovelady on June 16, 1827. This Sarah was probably "Ann", a daughter of Stephen. The marriage was performed by John Garner, Justice of the Peace, on June 21, 1827. (Date of license issued was June 16th). Marriage Book "C", page 69, states John Garner and Sarah Lovelady, on Aug. 4, 1828. The marriage was performed on Aug. 7, 1828, by John Booth, M.G. (Baptist). (Note: He married 1st in Elbert County, Ga. on Feb. 14, 1811,to Nancy Herd, who died July 5, 1827. He was born in North Carolina in 1799, died 1865 at Brierfield near Montevallo, Ala. He had 8 children by his first wife: 1. William, 2. Benjamin, 3. Jimmy, 4. Jackson, 5. Jesse, 6. Angeline, 7. Nancy, and 8. Hester Ann. William, their first child, was born Nov. 1811, in Pendleton District, So. Carolina. William married Elvira Mahan; Benjamin married Abigail Thomas; Angeline married a Ferrington; Hester Ann married Carter T. Ford, her first cousin; Nancy died at age 2.) Sarah and John Garner had 6 children: Rachel, Mary Jane, Loretta, Frances, David, and Bibb Garner. Nothing else is known of Rachel, Mary Jane, Loretta, Frances and David. Bibb married Mattie Tillman Thomas, a widow of William Thomas, and they had two children: John and Peter Perley. John married in Louisiana. Pete, a bachelor, was educated at A. & M. College in Starksville, Mississippi and later retired to his old home near Macon, Miss.

Notes for HENRY LOVELADY:
From the Lovelady Family Book in the Birmingham Public Library:
I. HENRY LOVELADY: Was born in Tennessee in 1800. Who he married is unknown. That he married is amply verified by the 1850 Census of Shelby County: Henry Lovelady, aged 50, born in Tenn.: Rachel Lovelady, aged 77 (Rachel Lindsey Lovelady-his mother), born in Pennsylvania; Lydia Lovelady, aged 35 (his sister), born in Alabama, and Franklin Lovelady, age 12, born in Alabama. Franklin would certainly be Henry's son, as Lydia never married.
Child of HENRY LOVELADY is:
i. FRANKLIN5 LOVELADY, b. 1838.
4. DAVID4 LOVELADY (WILLIAM MORGAN3, JOSEPH2, THOMAS?WILLIAM?1) was born 1801 in TN, and died before 1870 in AL. He married DOROTHY 'DOLLY' CLABAUGH January 23, 1824 in Bibb Co. AL by James Mahan, Justice of the Peace16, daughter of JOHN CLABAUGH and ELIZABETH HAGGARD. She was born 1806 in Sevier Co. TN, and died before 1890 in AL.
Notes for DAVID LOVELADY:
From the Lovelady Family Book, found in the Birmingham Public Library:
II. DAVID LOVELADY--born in 1801 in Tennessee. He married Dorothy Clabaugh born in Tennessee in 1807. They married on Jan. 23, 1824, in Bibb County, Alabama. According to the 1860 Census of Perry Co., Ala., their children were: (1) Mary E. Lovelady, age 34, (2) Noah H. Lovelady, age 29, (3) Rachel F. Lovelady, age 18, (4) Sarah M. Lovelady, age 15, (5) Margaret J. Lovelady, age 11, and (6) Samuel L. Lovelady, aged 9. All children were born in Alabama. from the 1840 Census of Bibb Co. there are listed 6 boys that do not appear on the 1860 Census and 3 girls that do not appear. Of the 6 missing boys the following three are most certainly David's and Dorothy's: James A. Lovelady to Delila Harrison Sept 28, 1852. Marriage was performed on Sept 30, 1852, by Jabez F. Brassell, M.G. (Baptist). David C. Lovelady to Margaret L. Sanders on Feb. 2, 1861, by A.B.Davis, Justice of the Peace. C.F. Lovelady to Martha A. Harris on Dec. 9, 1859. No minister;s return is recorded. C.F. Lovelady also appears on the 1860 Census of Perry County with his age listed as 24, born in Alabama and his wife, Martha A. Lovelady, aged 25, born in South Carolina. David had died by 1880 as he is not listed in the 1880 Census. Dorothy Lovelady, aged 73, and her daughter Mary Eliza Lovelady, aged 54 (never married), were living along.
Notes for DOROTHY 'DOLLY' CLABAUGH:
Dorothy 'Dolly' Clabaugh daughter of John and Elizabeth (Haggard) Clabaugh, was born about 1806 in Sevier Co. Tennessee. As a young girl, she moved with her parents to the wilderness of Alabama where they settled near Six Mile Creek in present Bibb Co.
In 1824, after obtaining a rather lengthy consent from her father, Dolly at the age of 17, on January 23rd married David Lovelady, son of William and Rachel Lovelady. The marriage was performed by James Mahan, Justice of the Peace.
Dolly and David Lovelady settled in neighboring Perry Co. where David received the patents to 60 acres in 1834 and 1835. Nearby was Dolly's Uncle Noah Haggard, who was an ordained minister of the Pisgah Baptist Church from 1834-1846.
The Loveladys continued to farm their 80 acres and in 1860 David, now 60, and Dolly, 54, still had six of their eleven children living with them: Mary 34, Noah 29, Rachel 18, Sarah 15, Margaret 11, and Samuel 9. Sons William Lovelady and Cumberland F. Lovelady had married and were living nearby, and son James A. Lovelady had moved to Leon Co. TX. near his Clabaugh uncles.

AL27,28.
Notes for WILLIAM LOVELADY:
William and his wife were expecting their eighth child when he left to serve in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Martha Jane was born about the time of , or a little before, his death. The information about his death came from a fellow soldier(probably from one of the Fulton boys, a brother-in-law, who had been with him at the time). He was killed in one of the battles fought in Virginia, near the end of the War, about 1865. The South, losing and their government being so disorganized, his body wasn't returned to Alabama. Further search in Virginia would no doubt result in more dates, etc., surrounding his death.
The day he left for service, Sarah Fulton Lovelady went to bed and for twenty-six years she lay there, never to get up again. She died as the results of the measles. "Why--" has been asked, but no one now seems to know the answer. Her grandson and granddaughter, Morgan Lovelady (son of James) and his wife, Beulah Nichols (daughter of Martha Jane) both remember seeing her when they were children. They remember a tiny little woman with grey hair who weighed less than 100 pounds.

Notes for SARAH FULTON:
Who Sarah's parents were is yet unknown. That she was a granddaughter of Samuel Fulton is the belief. Samuel Fulton was born in Ireland. He settled in North Carolina as a young man. There he married and became the father of eight sons and one daughter that are known of. His sons were: David Fulton, born August 20, 1795, in North Carolina, and died Sept. 23, 1875. He married Rebecca Lindsey on July 30, 1816, in Madson Co., AL. John Fulton, born about 1803, in North Carolina and married Rhoda Lovelady on April 20, 1824. Rhoda was a niece of Rebecca. Samuel Fulton, another son, was born between 1800 and 1815. Hiram Fulton, Madison Fulton, born 1815 in Madison Co., AL., married Mary who was born 1824 in No. Carolina. Robert Fulton, born in No. Carolina married Hulda Crowson and died in Talladega Co., AL. in1836. His Will implies that they were childless as he left everything to his beloved wife, Hulda, and 'her heirs'. William Fulton and Green Fulton were two other sons and the only daughter know was Elizabeth Fulton.
Sarah's is buried in the Lovelady/Chestnut Hill Cemetery. Her headstone reads: "Rest, Mother, rest in quiet sleep while friends in sorrow over thee weep."
