Notes for JOSEPH RUSH:

Copied from 'Am I My Own Grandpa?' by June Carter:

Joseph Rush was probably born about 1793 according to the 1850 Perry Co. Census.  He is listed as a 57 year old male born in S. C. with real estate valued a $1000.00.  Our knowledge of Joseph depends completely on census records and a lot of maybes and perhaps.  The 1790 Orangeburg District,  S.C. census show a John Rush family next door to Margaret Zimmerman and her family.

One of the oldest homes in the Panhandle area of Dallas County, Alabama was the Joseph Rush House.  He probably made his home there because of a land grant he received around 1836 or 1837.  Joseph served in the State Military in 1833 and according to records taken from the Land Grants of Cahaba, he purchased land in Perry and Dallas Counties.  Joseph's house, as remembered by Mr. Collie Friday was a large two story log house that sat on the east side of county road 37 approximately 30 or 40 yards north of the Will D. Rush house site.  The double log house had a chimney and foundation made from large sand stones gathered from the hillsides there in Panhandle.  Records from the Dallas County Courthouse show that Joseph Rush originally owned land starting south of Fellowship Church and extending as far north as the Dallas County line along with property in Perry County that joined his Dallas County property.  Mr. Collie Friday said Joseph owned all the land in Panhandle at one time.  The War between the States created major hardships for southern families and meant paying property taxes an impossible task for Joseph.  There was no money.  A farmer could own large herds of livestock, large amounts of property, but did not have currency to pay for anything.  He usually traded goods, but for paying taxes he needed money.  A large portion of Joseph's land was sold for unpaid taxes.  Records show 578 acres were sold to the State of Alabama in 1874 and 308 acres were sold to pay taxes.  Some of this land was then bought back from the State by some of Joseph's neighbors for paying the back tax.  A very inexpensive way to buy land.

North of Fellowship Church and South of Panhandle was a community called Moro.  Apparently Moro was one of the earlier settled communities in the area because very few people remember it.  An 1818 map of Dallas County by John Molish shows this community.  It was originally called Morrowville, but the Post Office changed the name to Moro to keep from confusing the mail since they already had a Morrowville.  Mr. Collie Friday's family was among the families that lived in Moro and he remembers a school, several stores, one belonging to Tom Gay and later to Joe Sanders and one across from Rube Little.  The Post office was in Mr. Little's store.  Mr. Jim Wright delivered the mail and later Mr. Walter Stoudermire.  This community was known for its Moro Ball Team.

        L. E. Davis owned a shingle mill across the creek from Panhandle and his shingles covered Fellowship Church at one time according to Eula Davis Rush.  Will D. Rush and Harvey Seymore had dipping vats to dip cows and Will D. had a store complete with a small basement that served as a cool room to store drinks and meat.  To keep the store supplied he would take Coleman Rush and one other person in wagons and go to Selma for supplies.  They would stop Four-Mile Branch and spend the night.  The next morning they went on into Selma, load the wagons, go back to Four-Mile Branch to camp for the night again and then back to Panhandle the next day.  This trip took three days.

There were odd jobs that came along, like the one of digging a drainage ditch for the County that Coleman, Leo and John Howard Rush took for two weeks.  For this two week's work all three men make a total of $125.00.
