1. OBEDIAH1 VINSON was born about 1780 in SC, and died between 1860 - 1870. He married ANNA/ANNIE COLESBY SMITH after 1811, daughter of COLBY SMITH and ANNA HENRY. She was born 1785 in NC, and died about 1876.

Annie Smith Vinson is the mother of Ellafair Vinson Yates, wife of Samuel Yates. I remembered a resource about Annie and Obediah Vinson. In 1909, Rev. George Washington Smith wrote a book on the first 50 years of the Mount Vernon Baptist Association located in primarily Washington County, Ga. This Association was formed and had as its first moderator Rev. Isaac Smith, brother to Annie Smith. Sketches were written about church's pastors and deacons of the first fifty years. One was written about Rev. James Raifford Wood, Son of Annie Smith by her first marriage to Thomas Wood, who died in 1811 It is listed in this sketch that Annie Smith Wood married Obediah Vinson and with her two daughters from her first marriage with their husbands, James Allen and Curtis Dupree, moved to AL. There she died in 1876 at an advanced age. The two daughters were Sarah and Nancy. I think maybe Annie and Obediah's son John H. might have died before they came to AL in 1837. Another son, maybe Obediah stayed in Clarke County, Ga and married. Their son Solomen came to AL with them. Their daughter Ellafair married Samuel Yates and their son Elijah Jerome was four years old when they came to AL. I'M guessing on Obediah and Annie having a son named Obediah. There is a land listing of an Obediah getting 644 acres of land in Autauga County, AL in 1855. Annie's Obediah would have been 65-70 years old then. Also, the person you gave me, Wardlow, said her Obediah was born in Texas in 1857. She said this one's father was born in AL and his mother in GA. Annie Smith Vinson was born in NC and her Obediah was born in Ga or SC. Maybe we can all put our research caps on for this one. Thanks for your time and please let me hear from you, Dess D. Smith III

He was unaware that both his Parents, Elijah Jerome and Mary Ann Ray Vinson, had died while he was away. At the time of the San Francisco Earth Quake, it was reported he was killed and his Family had accepted this report. He talks very very little to anyone. He appears to be in good health, is now 48, has said he had been in Wyoming, Canada, and in Oklahoma a long time. He is a brother to Mr. A.P. Vinson, Jerome, and Newton Vinson.

He was a Son of Elijah Jerome and Mary Ann Ray Vinson and he was the first born of their Eleven Children.

She worked as an office clerk. A widow, she died Tuesday, October 22, 1996, at South Haven Nursing Home in Birmingham. She is survived by two sisters: Pearl Martin and Elsie Martin, both of Birmingham; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Jeanette age 3, and her Mother, Mrs. Gatsy Eiland Vinson. Her Father, Rev. Isaac W. Vinson was killed in a farm accident in 1914 and her only Brother, William Evan Vinson was killed in an accident in 1921, she is survived also by one Sister, Mrs. Clarice Vinson Wright.

"The Clanton Advertiser," page 2, February 27, 2000, Funeral services for Annie Lannette Little, 76, Clanton, will be held on Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at First Baptist Church of Clanton at 11 a.m. with Dr. Larry Michael and Rev. Keith Dodd officiating. Burial will follow at Martin Memorial Cemetery in Clanton, with Martin Funeral Home directing. Little was born on June 16, 1923, in Jefferson County, the daughter of the late Grady Goodwin and Maude Elizabeth Williams. She was a school teacher for 28 years, teaching in the Bessemer City School Systerm and at Maplesville Elementary School in Maplesville. She died on Feb. 16, 2000, at Carraway Medical Center in Birmingham. Survivors include her husband, Rev. Cecil Little, Clanton; one daughter Mary Ellen Little Hood, Chantilly, Va.; two sisters, Mary Sue Melton, Little Rock, Ark., and Christine Childress, Clanton; four brothers, Joe H. Williams, MOulton, Marcus D. Williams, MIllbrook, Ray Williams, Montgomery, and Ralph Williams, Clanton; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Grady F. Williams.

Isaac W. Vinson, he died at Ensley last Thur. night as a result of a smash up of a car and a Street Car. He was riding in the Auto. Others in the car were Kin W. vinson, Sam Vinson, D.D> lee, and Lois Williams. Lee was killed instantly. They were all employed at Lubaco Mines. All were carried to Ensley Infirmary. Evan died without regaining consciousness, remains were brought to his Mother, Mrs. Gatsy Eiland Vinosn's home Friday and buried at Chestnut Creek on Sat. He leaves Wife, the former Miss Minnie Donovan, one child. His Mother, Mrs. Gatsy Eiland Vinson, 2 Sisters: Mrs. Clarice Vinson Wright, Wife of Martin V. Wright, and Miss Mary Ann Vinson, his Widow is expecting a second child in June.

Culp, 89 and a resident of Johnson City, were held on Monday, Oct. 23, 2000 at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Henderlight, Rev. David Lovelace and Rev. Jerry Everley officiating. Dr. Culp's body will be in Chilton County on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, where the family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. in Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church, with funeral services following in the church sanctuary with Rev. Jim Popwell officiating. Dr. Culp was a native of Chilton County and had been a resident of Johnson City for the last 33 years. The son of the late Joseph Daniel and Lela Popwell Culp, he served as superintendent of Schools in Chilton County from 1940-1946. He was also President-Emeritus of East Tennessee State University, where he served as president from 1968-77. Dr. Culp graduated from Isabella High School in 1931 as valedictorian of his class. He attended Jacksonville State University for two years, earning bachelor's and master's degree in science at Auburn University and his Doctor of Education Degree at Columbia University in 1949. He began his carreer in education as principal of a one-teacher school, moving up rapidly to principalship of a large city high school in Greenville, from which position he was elected Superintendent of Schools in Chilton County. He then became a member of the Professional Staff, Alabama State Department of Education, from 1946-1951, with leave for one year in chich he earned his Doctorate at Columbia University. Dr. Culp was a member of the United Methodist Church, Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City and Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church in Chilton County; a Sunday School teacher; steward; choir member; local and district Lay Leader; and Lay Leader of the South Alabama-West Florida Conference. He served on the Board of the Methodist Children's Home in Selma and was the author of numerous articles in religious publications and spoke in many churches.

153. "Chilton County News," Chilton County Alabama local newspaper, Page 1, January 7, 1982, Mr. Kenion Murphy Vinson, father of Clanton dentist Ken Vinson, died in a house fire New Year's day. Clanton Fire Chief Johnny Smith said the fire apparently started in a floor furnace around 3:00 a.m. January 1 and quickly spread throughout Mr. Vinson's Martha Street home. Firemen said that Mr. Vinson apparently was awakened by the fire and tried to escape. His body was found in a closet in the bedroom and it is believed that he became confused and mistook the closet door for one leading outside.

One son, Major William L. DeVaughn, Jr., U.S. ARmy, two grandson, Alan and Colin. One sister, Louisa D. Jones of Florida and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be at New Bethany Baptist Church at 3 p.m. December 27. He was Safety Director, R.E.A. of North Carolina and a Mason. Nicholson Funeral Home, Statesville, N.C. was in charge.
