Notes for WILLIS WILLIAM LANGSTON:

Copied from Rootsweb Internet Site, submitted by Cliff Gobin:

Buried Mount New Hope , Jemison, AL

Willis Langston was in Alabama with Isaac Newton and Sarah Patton Langston by 1820, when they are listed on the Monroe County census. He joined Antioch Baptist Church, Bibb County, Alabama, by baptism in Nov.

1837, along with his wife, Ina Louisa.

Willis and his family left Bibb County, about April 1855, when on the Saturday before the 4th Sabbath, Br. Willis Langston and his wife called for letters of dismission from Antioch Baptist Church. They moved to approximately 3 miles NE of what is now the town of Jemison, Alabama. It was then part of Shelby County, Alabama.

Family tradition holds that Willis had a falling out with the other members of his family over the question of slavery. Willis and his son, Andrew Jackson Langston, were killed by the Blackwell Crowd who operated out of Montevallo, Shelby County, Alabama near the end of the Civil War. Family tradition states that they were hanged.

The following account appears in the book "CHILTON COUNTY AND HER PEOPLE" by T. E. Wyatt, 1950. "A total of 17 men in Chilton Co. were killed by the Blackwell Crowd immediately following the close of the War; most were from the northern part of the County. The Blackwell Crowd were secessionists to the nth degree; they rounded up men who were supposed to have been Union sympathizers during the war. Men whose brutal deaths are charged to the Blackwell Crowd included: Charlie Cobb (a brother to Jim, who captured and killed Cobb's brother as well as another man by the name of Langston,; Jim Cobb was hung supposedly by Union sympathizers who strung him up to the sour apple tree at the Old Jim Cobb place near Stumps Hills), who lived back toward Montevallo, Jonathan Huckabee of Union Grove, Willis and Jack Langston of Dry Valley, Mart McDaniel, Thames Lowery, and Anderson Honeycutt." There must have been more to the story than that because Andrew Jackson Langston served with the C.S.A. In 1864, Andrew married Martha E. Cobb, a sister to Jim Cobb, who was supposed to be a member of the Blackwell Crowd; she was also the sister of Charlie Cobb, who was also killed by the Blackwell Crowd.

Willis Langston is buried in the Mount New Hope Church Cemetery also known as the Langston Cemetery, located between the Oak Grave and Rocky Mount communities, northeast of Jemison. The cemetery is unkept and is behind the house of F. G. Childress on Chilton County 44, farm with no fence to keep the livestock out. Land held by Will at his death was divided in 1872. Louisa, his widow who had since entered marriage with Rev. James Allen, was given her dower rights and the balance was sold for $1,892.50, which was divided between his ten children or their heirs who survived him.

Baker County records on Page 71, Probate Court Special Term July 27, 1872, George W. Langston Adm. of estate of Willis Langston, name widow Louisa Langston who had Dower right in land which can be laid off

and assigned, the following heirs at law as follows: Elizabeth Scott, wife of Eli Scott, George W. Langston, Zachariah W. Langston, Isaac N. Langston, Reason J. Langston, Columbus S. Langston, Sarah E. Scott, wife

of Wm Scoot, all of whom are over the age of 21 years and Franklin M. Langston and Mary Langston, children of Decedent and Louisa Lowery, a grandchild of Decedent who is under 21 years of age and all reside in

this County except Zachariah Langston who resides in the County of Bibb.

W. A. Jones appointed guardian ad litum of Mary Langston and Louisa Lowery. Additional proceeding on Dec. 7, 1872, report the following heirs: Louisa Allen, widow; Elizabeth Scott; Z. W. Langston, all

residing in Chilton County; I. N. Langston, residing in Shelby County; N. J. Langston, C. L. Langston, F.M. Langston, Sarah Scott wife of Perry Scott, Lucinda Lowery, age 14, and G. W. Langston, all residents of

Chilton County. Some of the heirs must had died between July 27 and Dec. 7, 1872.

On tombstone: Age about 52Y. From all life's labors he rests on high.
